Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will find something useful and interesting in this guide. So let's get started!

The Basics of Schafkopf

Schafkopf is played by four players with a German/Bavarian deck of cards that has four different suits (colors): Eichel (acorn), Gras (grass), Herz (heart) and Schellen (bells), and eight different values: Ober (officer), Unter (sergeant), Ass/Sau (Ace/Pig), 10, König (King), 9, 8 and 7. In a normal round of Schafkopf, all Obers and Unters as well as all heart cards are trumps, ranking above the ace of the suit. The highest trump is the Ober of acorns, followed by the Ober of grass, hearts and bells. The lowest trump is the seven of hearts.

All cards have a point value that is always constant in all game modes: Ober=3, Unter=2, Ace=11, 10=10, King=4 while 9, 8 and 7 have zero value. There are a total of 120 points in the deck. The goal of the game is to have more points than the opposing team by winning tricks with higher cards or trumps. The team that has at least 61 points wins the round. If one team has less than 30 points, it loses "Schneider". If one team has no points at all, it loses "Schwarz". The winning team gets a basic score of one point, plus one point for each of these conditions: winning, Schneider, Schwarz, or winning the last trick with the lowest trump. The score can be doubled or tripled depending on the game mode and the outcome.

The game is played in clockwise order. Before the game starts, the players form two teams of two players each, either by drawing cards or by agreement. The player who holds the Ober of acorns is the dealer and shuffles and deals the cards. Each player receives eight cards in batches of four. The player to the left of the dealer is the first to bid for the game mode. The bidding process determines which team will be the declarer (the player who bids the highest contract) and which team will be the defender (the other three players). The declarer can choose to play with a partner or alone, depending on the contract. The partner is usually determined by a specific card that the declarer calls for (the Rufer or Sauspiel contract) or by a specific suit that the declarer chooses (the Solo contract). The game then proceeds with trick-taking, where each player plays one card to the center of the table and the highest card or trump wins the trick. The winner of each trick leads the next one.

The Standard Schafkopf Mode

The standard Schafkopf mode is also known as Rufspiel or Sauspiel. In this mode, the declarer is the player who bids first and calls for a specific Ace (Sau) of a non-trump suit as his partner. For example, if the declarer calls for "Eichel-Sau", he is looking for the player who holds the Ace of acorns. That player becomes his partner and they play together against the other two players. The partner must not reveal himself until he plays the called Ace, unless he has no other choice. The declarer and his partner are also known as the Rufer (caller) and the Gerufener (called), respectively.

The rules of trick-taking are simple: each player must follow suit if possible, otherwise he can play any card. If there are trumps in the trick, the highest trump wins. If there are no trumps, the highest card of the led suit wins. The winner of each trick collects the cards and leads the next one. The game ends when all eight tricks have been played.

The possible game outcomes and penalties are as follows:

The Solo Contract

A Solo is a contract where the declarer plays alone against the other three players. The declarer can choose any suit as trump, including the suit of the called Ace in the standard mode. For example, if the declarer chooses Eichel as trump, all cards of that suit are trumps, ranking above the Obers and Unters. The declarer can also choose to play without a trump suit, in which case only the Obers and Unters are trumps. This is called a Farblos Solo or Null Solo.

The Solo contract is worth four times the score of the standard mode. For example, a normal win in a Solo is worth +8 points for the declarer. A Schneider win is worth +12 points, and a Schwarz win is worth +16 points. The same applies for losses. The defender's team can also announce Kontra, Re, Lege or Relege to double, redouble, quadruple or octuple the score.

The Wenz Contract

A Wenz is a special type of Solo where only the Unters are trumps, ranking in their usual order. The other cards follow suit as normal. A Wenz is worth five times the score of the standard mode. For example, a normal win in a Wenz is worth +10 points for the declarer. A Schneider win is worth +15 points, and a Schwarz win is worth +20 points. The same applies for losses. The defender's team can also an
